Erin PeekScholarship Recipient & Student Engineer, Brisbane

Erin admits she didn’t know a lot about engineering in high school. But she’s glad that a conversation with her school careers advisor and her keen interest in maths and science has led her to the engineering profession.

Erin is a second year engineering student at the University of Queensland and a recipient of Brown Consulting’s Dream Big Scholarship.

The Dream Big Program provides Erin with paid work experience, financial support for university expenses and a job when she graduates. For Erin, the opportunity to undertake work placements while studying and gaining real world experience is the greatest benefit.

“Through my work experience I’ve been able to see the theories I’m studying at university being put into practice. And in some cases I’m learning things at Brown Consulting before I’ve been taught them at university,” Erin said.

“Also, working for extended periods during the longer university holidays means I can see projects through and gain a better understanding of the development process,” she added.

“All my colleagues at Brown have been fantastic and are happy to sit down and explain things in detail. In addition, my office has a great social club and fitness program for staff, which is something I didn’t expect.”

Erin is now sharing her positive experience with other young women who are not sure about their future career.

“I’ve talked to a number of current high school students about engineering and working at Brown Consulting. I think engineering is a really interesting profession and I love the project management side. I also think Dream Big is a great program and I feel privileged to be a recipient of the scholarship,” said Erin.
