The Edwin Flack Bridge across Melbourne's Olympic Boulevard forms a link between the new Plaza and AAMI Stadium. In close collaboration with Watpac, Jackson Architects and VicRoads, a number of bridge solutions were investigated during the design development stage, with particular emphasis on minimising disruption to traffic during construction.
Roads & Traffic Projects
Brown Consulting was engaged by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to provide at least three contemporary alternative pavement designs for a 14,000-vehicle-movement-a-day urban arterial road servicing the major town centre of Caloundra. The council requested options to provide a pavement life of at least 40 years. The project included estimates and a maintenance regime for a number of alternatives which council is currently considering.
The Werribee Bridge is a two traffic lane and dual footpath road bridge over deep ravine with spans of 20m and 30m. The deck comprises of a reinforced concrete slab and pre-tensioned Super T deck beams, launched with overhead launching truss.
Piers comprised of reinforced concrete columns being direct extensions from shallow bored cast in situ piles, socketed into Basalt rock. Design loading to HLP 320.
The Kosciuszko Road Toll Booths Relocation project involved upgrading the National Park entry toll collection facility to relieve traffic queues up to 8km long. Using AIMSUN microsimulation model, Brown Consulting developed a concept for the new facility at a disused service station at Sawpit Creek, as well as the detail design. The whole process from the start of microsimulation to the opening of the facility, including all approvals and the construction, took only five months.
The Six Mile Creek bridge upgrade involved the realignment of approximately 1km of road and the provision of a new five span bridge under traffic conditions.
Scope of Services. Brown Consulting was responsible for preparing the detailed design component of this project.
Fitzgerald Constructions engaged Brown Consulting to provide structural design services for the Seafarers Bridge, a pedestrian bridge that crosses the Yarra River to connect the new Convention Centre with the Docklands precinct. The architect, Grimshaw Partners, had a very clear vision for the Seafarers Bridge, which consisted of a bridge deck supported by steel ties connected to elliptical arches over a main span of 75 metres. Seafarers Bridge was both a complex and challenging project due to the bridge’s unique architectural design, tight budget and fast construction timeline.
The Belconnen to City Busway is a 7.5km long busway with a construction value of $120 million in 2006 dollars. This major public transport project also includes tunnels, bridges and cycling facilities. In developing the concept design for the busway, Brown Consulting needed to consider the future possible upgrade to a light rail route, as well as balance the environmental impact on the flora and fauna communities at O’Connor Ridge and Bruce Ridge.
