Josh Stone, Engineer, Brisbane
In 2004 Josh Stone was one of the first to be accepted into the Brown Consulting internship program. During the fourth year of his combined Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Engineering degree, Josh was already working part time at Brown Consulting so he was a natural candidate to apply for the internship.
“I had been working at Brown’s 1-2 days a week and during the uni holidays since the end of second year and found out about the internship program,” said Josh.
For Josh, the best thing about working at Brown Consulting part time and studying full time was the ability to get experience in different engineering disciplines and to see what the engineers did – first hand.
“I’ve been able to work in different sections such as structures, civil – urban projects and water/environmental area,” said Josh. “The ability to gain experience across all areas has been of great benefit. It also helped me decide that urban development project work is my preference.”
Josh said that whilst the generous financial incentives during university as well as the graduation bonuses were a great help, the real difference was knowing that he had a guaranteed full time job on completion of his degree.
“Having a secure job before graduating was one thing that I didn’t have to worry about. Brown Consulting was incredibly accommodating with balancing work commitments and life as a student,” said Josh. “They knew there were times where I couldn’t commit to work – especially during exams and were flexible with summer internships.”
For Josh, the ongoing attraction of Brown Consulting, is not only the project work, but the culture of the company.
“The directors and senior staff are all really accessible. The teams are smaller and I’ve had the opportunity to work on projects from inception to completion,” said Josh. “I’ve also taken on a lot more responsibility than my peers who work at larger consultancies.”
